Her Royal Highness

Marie Antoinette was screened at Cannes today, where it was received with a less than enthusiastic reaction. The film was met with catcalls and boos. Pero but why??? I'm dying to see this movie. I'm now super duper excited now that I read Marianne Faithfull was cast as Marie's mother. I love love love Marianne Faithfull. I still haven't bought her last album Before the Poison.
I really have to fucking get it. Hello- it features collaborations with PJ Harvey. Her album Kissin' Time was really good. I love her cover of Carole King's "Something Good." And it has an awesome cover. Speaking of music the Marie Antoinette soundtrack is amazing. It has New Order's Age of Consent and Bow Wow Wow's cover of "I Want Candy," two of my favorite songs. The soundtrack is fucking out of this world. I have a lot of these songs already but still who would have thunk it, to match 18th century royalty with a post punk soundtrack. I love love love Siouxsie & the Banshees, Adam Ant, The Cure, & The Strokes. Here's the complete listing from imdb.

"Natural's Not In It" - Gang of Four

"The Melody Of A Fallen Tree" - Windsor for the Derby

"I Don't Like it Like This" - The Radio Dept.

"Jynweythek Ylow" - Aphex Twin

"Pulling Our Weight" - The Radio Dept.

"Il Secondo Giorno Instrumental" - Air

"Keen On Boys" - The Radio Dept.

"I Want Candy (Kevin Shields Remix)" - Bow Wow Wow & Kevin Shields

"Hong Kong Garden" - Siouxsie and the Banshees

"Aphrodisiac" - Bow Wow Wow

"Fools Rush In (Kevin Shields Remix)" - Bow Wow Wow & Kevin Shields

"Plainsong" - The Cure

"Ceremony" - New Order

"Tommib Help Buss" - Squarepusher

"Ou Boivent Les Loups" - Phoenix

"Kings of the Wild Frontier" - Adam Ant & The Ants

"Avril 14th" - Aphex Twin

"What Ever Happened?"- The Strokes

"All Cats are Grey"- The Cure

Dress You Up

Here's one of my favorite GAP commercials. For awhile there in the late 90's GAP commercials were brilliant. This one features one of my favorite Madonna songs "Dress You Up" & Alex Greenwald, the lead singer of Phantom Planet before Phantom Planet was big and when he was a model. This is from the Everybody In Vests campaign for Gap.

In keeping with the Madonna theme here are some outtakes from the backdrop for "Vogue" from the Re-Invention tour.

Let Them Eat Cake

In keeping with the theme of Marie Antoinette here are some amazing videos I found over at YouTube. Diana Vreeland (influential editor of Vogue) being interviewed by Marisa Berenson (Hint, hint: starred in Cabaret) about Marie. It was filmed in New York, 1982. It's super short but totally worth it.

Here's Madonna's unforgettable 1990 performance of "Vogue" in 16th century drag at the MTV Video Music Awards. An insanely brilliant idea.

Here's a shitty quality behind the scenes look at the movie which came out in the insipid ET on MTV.

Off With Her Head...

I can't wait to see Marie Antoinette! It looks like it's going to be really good. I wasn't sure about Kirsten Dunst being able to play her. Kirsten looks so young but I guess it works because Marie Antoinette was really young. I've loved all of Sofia Coppola's movies. I love love love The Virgin Suicides and I still can't get enough of Lost in Translation. I have thereby forgiven her for ruining The Godfather 3. I love that she used New Order's "Age of Consent" for the movie trailer. It's totally fucking brilliant.
